Process Diary: Shoes
WEEK 3 OF GOA FILMMAKING:
For the third week of GOA Filmmaking, I began the first level of the camera skill tree. The assignment was to create a film with a "depth of reveal". Here's the original version my film:
Here's a second version where the music doesn't change:
I found this short film (similar
to the ones we're making) that uses rack shots.
I also found this video (below) that explains depth of field and how to control
it (I like this one because it sort of relates to this week's discussion on
lenses):
I learned a couple of things from my critique this week. The first is that when making a short film, it's better to stick to one soundtrack, or else the music seems too choppy.
The second thing I learned is that my reveal at the end wasn't as revealing as I'd hoped. The idea of my film was that Ollie, my dog, was supposed to be at home by himself making a huge mess. At the end of the day, someone came home and found that he'd completely taken apart the shoe closet. I was given the feedback that the end was only sort of a reveal, and that a rack shot would've been more effective. A rack shot was what I originally wanted, and I attempted to get one in nine different places, but the only place it worked was at the top of the stairs. Other than that, my phone kept both objects in focus and I just couldn't get it to work out.
Finally, I got a sense that my audience is a little bored of my dog. I'm going to make sure to branch out so that people remain interested in my films.
As seen above, I worked out the music. Unfortunately, I can't edit my film to incorporate the other feedback I was given because it requires new footage, and I currently don't have time to acquire it. However, I will be sure to keep the comments in mind for my next films.
As always, I will see you all soon!
