Time is Money

ZOOM PLAYS

'Time is Money' is an entry Grace and I made for the Oxford University Drama Society's (OUDS) 'cuppers' competition. The play was to be under 30 minutes and filmed on Zoom (with no editing). It is technically a play, but since it was filmed, I decided to include it here.

The plot and script were composed by Grace. We were evidently constrained by Zoom, but we did write a little on how we would stage and execute the play. However, a lot of my ideas are more suited for a film (especially since I like the online format). I would have liked for the exits to be cut more seamlessly (there was nothing we could do about the lag on Zoom), and I would have liked to play more with lighting. Perhaps the sequence in the past could have sepia-toned lighting, whilst the sequence in the future could have brighter (white or colorful  lighting. I would also have liked to create transitions during the time travel — perhaps inspired by hyperspace in Star Wars.

I was limited by my own wardrobe, but the difference between time periods could have been heightened by more elaborate costumes (such as fringe boots or low-waisted jeans in the first sequence — although I would have to be standing — and futuristic glasses and a jumpsuit later). I would certainly have liked a more cheesy or cliché futuristic outfit.

Lastly, Grace and I also discussed (spoiler) potentially having reveal at the end: perhaps after the Zoom call ends, it is revealed that both characters are actually present in the same room.

Despite the limitations, I enjoyed the project (any excuse to act or make a film 😁). I am glad we are finding ways to adapt and continue drama and filmmaking in spite of the current lockdown.
