A Fairytale in the Laundry Room (Bora Rex)

THE MAGDALEN WASHING ROOM

This was such a fun production to work on! We were a small crew of three and a cast of two and we filmed over two nights in the Magdalen laundry room (I had never been in the college before).

Bora was the director and screenwriter. I was the AD and primarily did the sound recording (and acted as Grace's agent). Hugo was the director of photography. Grace (whom Bora cast without knowing we were housemates) and Alec were the cast. I enjoyed working with and meeting everyone – it was a lot of fun. I also spent time watching Hugo work with the camera and Bora direct. Observing on this film and Rhea's is making me feel more confident about directing my own.

The script is sweet and seemingly simple but the relationship between the two characters is in actuality quite complex. I like the power dynamic: the female character is in charge of the situation. I have an interesting take on the script, but I don't know if this is the intent: I think that the whole film may be a dream or vision that the protagonist has – an Annunciation like moment where he realises what he needs to change in his life.

The laundry room was a fun set. It was a decently sized room that we could play with, it was mostly quiet, and we were almost never interrupted – on the second day one person's laundry was there when we arrived, and he picked it up a few hours later. I was genuinely baffled; doing laundry in Worcester is a battle. It can take me a whole day to find a free washing machine, and if you don't move your clothes as soon as the machine finishes, they will most likely end up on top of the machine (or in someone's bag). His laundry ended up being useful, as we were able to film the machine running. His clothes are now movie stars 😂.

I'm really excited to see how the film comes together. And I will be doing my laundry in Magdalen from now on.
