OUFF's Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K
A WEEK WITH OUFF'S CAMERA
For the past year, I have had an intense fear of OUFF's camera – especially in recent months since the Blackmagic Ursa camera was broken. However, after I was asked to film the Tick,... Tick,... Boom! dress trailer and photograph an Edgar Wind Society (the History of Art society) event with Tim Marlow, I realised I needed to learn how to use it.
Alongside Cyrus and Ciana, who were learning to use the camera to film a short film called 'Out of the Blue' (post coming soon), I research tutorials online and key features of the camera. I created a ridiculously long checklist in my notes of the settings I wanted and fiddled with the camera in a few spare moments.
The first time I properly used it was while shooting the Tick,... Tick,... Boom! trailer. It went smoothly and I'm happy with the footage.
I ended up taking the camera with me to a party that evening (I didn't have time to drop off the camera and tripod bag). I very much hope that the camera is never again put at risk in such a setting; however, I did enjoy taking a few pictures of my friends. I shared a few on my Ab Faff Productions Instagram.
I'm excited that OUFF are launching our camera workshops so that everyone can learn how to use the camera. Teaching myself – someone who is technologically challenged – to use it shows that anyone can teach themselves via the internet, but it can still be daunting and we of course want to protect the camera against such circumstances.
This camera is so much sleeker than the previous OUFF camera and I love the cinematic style and colour of the footage. I'm looking forward to editing the TTB trailer and uploading it shortly.
