Troy Story Trailer
POWER OUTAGE
I am the Marketing Manager on an original musical, Troy Story: The Age of the Hero, which will be performed at the Keble O'Reilly Theatre (23-26 November 2022). The creative team and I decided that we wanted to create a trailer to market the show. Together we devised a shot list and a concept, inspired by one of the opening songs they had written.
We filmed the trailer in the BT Studio in Oxford; we chose this location because we wanted to use the black box and lighting rig. We had numerous close ups of objects that were linked to the song lyrics (Greek armour, vases, columns,...). It took us a while to get the placement and colours of the lighting right, especially because some of the objects were reflective. Unfortunately, minutes after we found the perfect lighting, the power went out on the street.
Fortunately, half the lights were still working so we were able to adapt and use those. I also brought my Ulanzi LED light and we were able to use that. It was a surprisingly long shoot day (roughly eight hours) but the production were happy with the footage. My favourite shots were an accidental discovery: we had a gold spray to make a golden apple, and we realised that it created gold dust that swirled in the background. This added dimension and some subtle movement to shots of the vases.
UDPATE: This was the first trailer I have shot that I did not edit myself, so I was interested to see how it would come out. Overall, I am happy with it, but I do think that it is a bit too stagnant. It would have been nice to have some more shots of people – we could have played with the black background and lighting. Something to think about for next time.
