The Making of Bunnyhood (Mansi Maheshwari)

HOW TO MAKE A HAND DRAWN FILM

After seeing my work as a BTS videographer on Absolute Faff Productions' social media, the Producer of Bunnyhood, Ashionye, asked if I could film a short BTS video for the grad animation project. The Director (Mansi) and Ashionye sent me references and videos on hand drawn animation so that I could learn about the process and what they were looking for. I planned for a video 2-5 minutes long with no dialogue (Mansi initially did not want to speak) and my biggest challenge was therefore learning what text should go on the subtitles. I was still learning about the process but also did not want the video to have too much text.

During the Christmas vacation I visited Mansi's base at NFTS and filmed her and her assistants (Ryan and Elizabeth) working on the various stages of animation: storyboarding, drawing, line testing, painting, assembling, and scanning. This was the first time I got to use my Lumix GH6 camera for filming! I then met with Mansi again to go through the storyline and footage. I am very pleased that she is happy with the footage; however, I had initially thought we were filming in a documentary style for YouTube, but the intention for the video changed to a TikTok / Instagram reel. Due to this shift, Mansi is editing the video to ensure the video achieves the tone she desires and that the key information is conveyed.

The BTS video will be used to advertise the film in its festival circuit. 'Bunnyhood' (@bunnyhoodfilm on Instagram) has been selected for Cannes in La Cinéf category and Animafest Zagreb.
